Major companies join to create 100% plant-based packaging

Coca-Cola, Ford, Heinz, Nike, and Procter & Gamble have joined forces to push for 100% plant-based packaging for their products. Calling their alliance the Plant PET Technology Collaborative, the group will build on the success of The Coca-Cola Company’s PlantBottle packaging technology (also licensed by Heinz) , which is partially made from plants.

PET, also known as polyethylene terephthalate, is a plastic used by all member companies in a variety of products and materials including plastic bottles, apparel, footwear and automotive fabric and carpet.

Plant-based PET isn't a silver bullet,  but it has demonstrated a lower environmental impact when compared to traditional PET plastic bottles. And if even if it isn't perfect, it's still a whole lot better for the environment than petroleum-based packaging.
